Welcome to my blog!
I would like to say “I hope you find this helpful”, but I feel that would be presumptuous and over-optimistic, so I’ll set the expectation bar low and then any positive feedback is a bonus! In all honesty I feel like it would be more apt to describe what is to come as the ramblings of a madman (nod to the XFM podcasts with Ricky Gervais, Steve Merchant and Karl Pilkington there – if you haven’t listened to these, forget reading this and go to YouTube and listen to them!), albeit a slightly food obsessed madman.
In case you are not familiar with the background to this website and blog, I will give you a brief overview. My son, Reuben, was born in February 2019, making me the luckiest person alive in the process. I knew that having a baby would change my life, but experiencing it is something different entirely… I’m digressing here, so I will get back on track! Anyway, I have always been an avid foodie and home cook. Since meeting my wife (12 years ago this year!) I have always been the cook when it comes to our mealtimes. My love of food is something that I take seriously and I was always excited to try and pass this enthusiasm for ingredients/recipes onto any children we had.
After some research on Google, my wife and I decided that we were going to go down the path of ‘Baby Led Weaning’, much to the dismay of my mother in law… I could write an entire blog on the number of times I’ve heard “you’re giving him that?”, “are you sure?” and my personal favourite “oh I can’t watch”. It got to the point that I would send her pictures of entire grapes with the caption “Reuben’s snack” just to wind her up… that was a joke though, don’t feed your baby that.
I decided that I would take the leap into Instagram during this baby led weaning journey. I’m still not quite sure why I started it, but if I’m honest it became really helpful in terms of me getting creative with Reuben’s meals and in hindsight it was the best decision I could have made… @theblwdad was born! To be honest I was surprised when the account started to gain a decent following, but it was amazing and I still feel privileged to this day. The most surprising aspect of this to me, however, was the number of messages that I would receive on a daily basis, from fellow parents, asking my advice about various aspects of weaning. After doing a lot of reading at the start of weaning I wasn’t entirely surprised by people having so many questions about weaning, as the information out there is sparse and can be contradictory at times. Over time I decided that creating a website would be a fantastic idea, as it would give me the platform to try and provide people with the information and recipe inspo that they are seeking. I then decided that if I was going to go to the effort of making a website, then I may as well start a weaning blog!
That is where the name for this blog ‘The Next Journey Begins…’ originates from. I feel that I have now transitioned from being the baby led weaning account that posts what Reuben is eating, to one that will hopefully help others in their weaning journeys. It is definitely a new chapter in my journey and I am absolutely thrilled about it. So, what will I be bringing to the table?
My plan for this blog is to, hopefully, have it transcend from just being a typical food blog. Of course I will be posting my recipes on here, but I want it to be more than just that. On Instagram I have had the privilege of getting to know several people behind other weaning/food accounts, who all post amazing content on a regular basis. Instagram these days is really the place to be if you’re seeking inspiration for something, it is really amazing. It struck me that hosting a guest blog is the way forward. So in addition to my blog posts, I will be hosting blog posts from other Insta accounts on a regular basis. These will vary in their topics, from regular recipe posts, to things like special diets (i.e. CPMA, Vegan etc) to more practical posts, such as how to get your little ones involved in the preparation of food at home. I hope you enjoy this aspect of things to come, as I am really excited to be able to host some of these amazing people on this website.
If you have any ideas/questions that you would like to see addressed in this blog then please leave me a comment and I will do my best to answer them! I’ll aim to post on the blog regularly, but while you are waiting for the next one feel free to explore the rest of the website – I hope you like it!
